The Story of Dormy House

The idea behind Dormy House stems from a combined history of personal experiences.

After graduating in 2010 with a degree in economics, entrepreneurship, and business from Indiana University our founder, Matt Welter, began Caddying at the Kingsbarns in the UK - experiencing, first-hand, the struggles of not living near the course. Early and long hours combined with lengthy commutes made life difficult as a course employee.

Years later in America, a lifelong passion for golf led Matt to golf Cabot Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. After a three-hour drive from the airport through remote country he arrived at his destination.

Throughout the stay, Matt spoke to several employees regarding how and where they lived in relation to the course. The challenges they faced to simply arrive to work in a timely manner conjured up the experiences Matt experienced while caddying in the UK. The perspective, however, had changed…

By this time, Matt had 5 years experience as the founder and owner of a growing development company. Having completed several successful developments, Matt had a clear understanding of the process as well as experience working with all parties involved.

Matt spoke to several resort owners to confirm his suspicions regarding their ongoing challenge to attract and retain staff.

The problems both parties were experiencing were evident and the dots began to connect - leading Matt toward Dormy House.

As he continued to travel, speak to resort ownership, and resort staff he learned the challenges resort staff were experiencing were global - not just on one particular course or continent.

As a direct result of the lack of on-site housing for staff, course owners, specifically in remote areas, struggle with hiring, turnover, and retention issues.

These unique perspectives informed the idea and, with opportunity incessantly knocking, Matt began planning and investing in the creation of a singular solution that benefited all parties involved.

To solve the labor market issues facing golf resorts around the world by providing on-site, workforce housing for their employees - improving their quality of life and, ultimately, the overall guest experience.
